The company Algenion GmbH & Co. KG was founded in 2004. The purpose of the company is to develop and market cultivation systems for microalgae based on the proprietary Twin-Layer technology. Twin-layer technology is an innovative method to grow microalgae in an immobilized state on ultrathin support layers.

With the novel technology, the full potential of microalgal biodiversity can be realized and the myriad of valuable substances derived from microalgae such as natural food colorants, poly-unsaturated fatty acids, or novel drug candidates can now be produced and brought to the market.

Algenion cooperates with Professor Michael Melkonian (University of Cologne), one of the world’s leading algal researchers and his research group who invented twin-layers and provide scientific support for Algenion.
