The Phycomat – Taking the Labor out of Microalgal Cultivation

Why use the Phycomat in microalgal cultivation?

The estimated total number of algal species exceeds one million, representing a potentially unlimited source of biological diversity. The current status of the use of microalgae, however, does not reflect this potential. For the main part this relates to the extent of manual labor involved to maintain each strain by regular serial transfer of cultures, especially when numerous strains need to be handled in parallel as in resource centers, personal collections or in screening experiments. For these users, Algenion offers a novel system for the stable long-term cultivation of microalgae, the Phycomat, based on the Twin-Layer technology. In the Phycomat, microalgae are immobilized on an ultrathin porous substrate represented by a 96-well filter plate.
The Phycomat takes out the labor of microalgal cultivation: It allows the cultivation of a wide spectrum of microalgae in a 96-well standard format in conjunction with a simultaneous exchange of culture medium for all strains within minutes without the need to transfer cells. These properties make the Phycomat the most versatile and cost-saving system for parallel cultivation of microalgal strains currently available.
